***

Searching for war trophies through houses appearing to be haunted and industrial buildings reduced to rubble, I stumbled upon an abandoned improvised shelter. That was another moment of glory, evidence of conquest and divine vengeance. I do not know on what impulse I picked up the useless items and shoved them in my backpack: an ancient six shooter, a broken music box, a photo of two women in old-fashioned lingerie, and a pencil scribbled note.
It is however until this day, that I hang on to those relics as if they have a deep sentimental meaning. Maybe they do, bringing back memories of the time when I was younger, and paths to take were written. On cold nights, resting by the fireplace, I pull the note from between the pages of A Clockwork Orange.

The coups and civil wars are almost over. I will survive. As long as there is something to offer, I’ll have supplies and food. Word spreads fast. Military, fighters, civilians all come here, alone and groups.
Degenerates!
And there are those who want the game. What do they know? Never saw it smirking in their faces. Is it an addiction? It is not. The stakes are high, and I learn to deal with fear. Will be done soon!
One shot! That I don’t think about much.
13th is next.

Reaching for my drink, something the doctors have strictly prohibited a long time ago, I wonder if all was worth it.

I was tagged by SlimMckenzie and started this scene in pinup style, hoping to include as many references as possible to the questions I was asked and those I was about to ask. For better or for worse, it evolved into the narrative and image as posted, with some of the references still there, others removed, and different ones added in the process. I realize that the image and story may be perceived as bizarre and confusing (although there are a few hints on possible outcomes for the character), but it is what it is.

The Journal is here 13th.

I had to comment once I saw the allusion to "Clockwork"--one of my most favorite novels/movies of all time. I appreciate that the narrative thrust is reversed with this reference clearly being female in contrast to Alex's male vision/voice.

It is curious that this woman has had her hair shaved. . . and I really appreciate the sense of texture that you have forged into the objects in the foreground. As always, I am puzzled by that is not said: e.g. why is there clearly electric light in a post-apocalyptic vision? Why the margin of a man (which does not bother me sexually or politically, but artistically pulls forth this observation). If he her partner or killer? Why the chain around her neck (other than the "tipping of your hat" to those who appreciate the suggestions of female bondage to those pervs who comb your images).

I also appreciate the earth tones here. This multiple meaning: artistic non sequitur with its suggestion of sepia, a colorless post-apocalypse, a dirty future, a certain post-modernist vision where fragments of the past are meaningless (consider the photos and the six-shooter). . . Lots of fun and lots of unanswered questions from me. . .
